UCI – CIRM COMPASS Scholarship Program & Scholarship

UCI’s “CIRM COMPASS Scholar’s Program” will train undergraduates for a range of careers in regenerative medicine. COMPASS Scholars will be paired with a faculty mentor and be supported for two years with tuition, fees, a stipend, and a research allowance. COMPASS Scholars will live on campus during summer school in ’25 & ‘26, where they will learn hands-on lab skills, human stem cell culture techniques, an introduction to good manufacturing procedures (GMP), and earn a certificate in Clinical Research Coordination (CRC). Scholars will enroll as BIO199s (mentored research) over 6 quarters across the two years of scholarship support, culminating in a Capstone Project. They will present their Capstone Project at an annual conference.
What do CIRM Scholars get? Up to $70,000 in support over two years, including partial tuition and fee coverage, a monthly stipend during the academic year, a summer internship stipend/summer housing, funds for research supplies (which go to their host lab), and a small travel award. CIRM Scholars will be paired with individual faculty mentors and postdoc/graduate student co-mentors for one-on-one training and support. Scholars will learn hands-on laboratory techniques, microscopy, cell culture, biotech manufacturing, regulatory affairs, public and scientific presentation skills, and take classes in regenerative medicine, stem cells, and health care disparities.
What is expected of CIRM Scholars? This program is open to freshmen and sophomores and requires a two-year commitment. Scholars will participate in all program-sponsored events, live on campus during 10-week summer sessions (of 2025 and 2026), enroll as a BIO199 for 6 quarters, complete an Excellence in Research (or equivalent) Capstone Project, enroll in courses in regenerative medicine and/or scientific method, public health disparities, and sociology, political science, or health bioethics. Ancillary activities include attendance at Stem Cell Research Center scientific presentations, and helping host the Public Seminar Series.
Who are we? The Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center (SCRC) consists of more than 65 science faculty across the campus who can mentor COMPASS Scholars. Activities within the SCRC include basic and translational stem cell research using multidisciplinary approaches, such as cell biology, genomics, computational biology, bioengineering, pre-clinical development, and clinical applications/practice. Faculty are also engaged in understanding the stem cell field in the wider context of health disparities and ethics. There are training and research opportunities across a wide range of topics including new cell sorting and manufacturing methods, biomaterials to control cellular development, 3D cell culture and fused organoids, health disparities, bioethics, and upcoming trials for retinal repair, brain injury, stroke, ALS, and Huntington’s disease.
An important goal of this program is opening new career pathways for UCI students. For example, there are shortages of individuals trained in stem cell manufacture and good manufacturing procedures (GMP) (average salary $68,940) as well as shortages of Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) (average salary $75,726). The more diverse these individuals are, the better they will connect with a diverse patient population and bring a wider range of patients into the clinical trial pipeline.
More information on the UCI COMPASS Scholar’s Program can be found here.

We will confirm our cohort of COMPASS Scholars by April 2024 so you can plan for Summer Session.
Applications for the next cohort are due by 11:59 PM on MARCH 4th, 2025.
